Über mich

(English below)

Ende Dezember 2002, Weihnachtsferien.

About me

Late December 2002, Christmas holidays. I’m sitting in my living room with a cup of tea, grading students’ papers. A VHS tape is playing in the background: The Lord of the Rings—Part 1. I got it for Christmas and didn’t think much of it at the time. So far, the hype had pretty much passed me by. I’m following the plot with half an eye at most. And then it happens. The one moment that makes me look up: One of the humans speaks the language of the Elves.
The scene immediately captures my undivided attention—just like, years earlier, the scene from Stargate (the movie) in which Daniel Jackson discovers that he can communicate with the Abydonians because their language is based on ancient Egyptian.
It’s the magical moment when mere communication turns into true understanding—between individuals, between peoples, between worlds. Exploring different worlds and ways of life—whether real or imagined—is something I deeply care about. And language is my instrument.
(Little did I know that this quiet winter evening would mark the start of another fandom my son—who was in elementary/primary school at the time—and I would share for years to come.)

Looking back, that evening captured themes that have run through my whole life: a fascination with language; always one foot in reality, the other in a world of my own making; and an instinct to cross boundaries rather than accept them as fixed.
Even as a child, I had a fondness for complicated words, enjoyed expressing myself in (very many!) complex sentences, and could already read and write before starting school. Not because anyone had pushed me. I wanted to learn it. I’ve always made up stories and entire worlds, and from a very early age I had a strong desire to find my own way through life—and a strong belief that everyone should have the freedom to live a life that is true to their nature (a typical Aquarius, after all…)

Although my career has always revolved around language (first as a teacher, then in adult education, and finally as a literary translator), I was only able to explore these themes to a limited extent in those roles. As an author, I now finally have the opportunity to weave all aspects together in my stories.
After translating about fifty novels, publishing three of my own stories in a different genre as well as a nonfiction book, I've finally reached the place I've always wanted to be.
I get a lot of moral and practical support from my son (who is now a graphic designer) and a gaming, sci-fi, and fantasy nerd. We share a love for books, movies, TV shows, Italian food, homemade cookies, and—no big surprise—cats.

I hope that I’ll be able to entertain, touch, and enchant you with my stories. Welcome to “Faye-World“!
